Canal City is one of the more recent developments in Fukuoka, a 2.5 million sq. ft. 250 store complex built in 1996 that cost US$1.4 billion, and is one of the largest private developments in Japan. It is based on an American shopping mall and while limited due to tight land restrictions it has a large array of shops, cinemas, restaurants, and things outlandish. It is also next to the Hyatt Hotel and Washington Hotel. Canal City has a great selection of restaurants including a wide area of eateries specializing in ramens popular across Japan. AMC also has a large multiplex cinema there, and some discount computer shops are also there too. There is a 180m canal that runs through the complex with an hourly fountain show with music. You can also find a Japanese Post Office ATM and bank for foreign exchange, coin lockers, free stroller rentals, and on the 3rd floor an internet corner with 2 computers (100 yen/10 min). Canal City is within walking distance of either the Nakasu-Kawabata or Gion subway stops. From the Nakasu-Kawabata Station simply walk south following the Naka River for about 10 minutes. From Gion Station walk west down Kokutai-Doro until you see the Naka River and turn left. With a bit more effort it is also about 15 minutes on foot from Tenjin or Hakata Station.
There is also a 100 yen bus you can take from Tenjin that loops by.
